History
The genus Ensete first described what Paul (or Paulo or Paulus) Fedorowitsch Horaninow (or Horaninov) (1796-1865) in his 1862 Prodromus Scitaminarum Monographiae which created a single species, Ensete edule.
However, this genre received no public recognition until 1947 when it was rediscovered by E. E. Cheesman in the first of a series of papers in the Kew Bulletin within the classification of bananas.
Habitat
This is a genus of tropical regions of Africa some in Asia. Cultivated in gardens of tropical and subtropical regions. It is located in the banana family (Musaceae family).
Description
The genus Ensete have the external appearance of the banana, but unlike them, lack of rhizome, perpetuated by seed. Species are monocarpic, meaning that once the seeds have been killed. They have three sepals, three petals and stamens with anthers 5-6 linear.
The woody fruit is a dehiscent capsule containing numerous seeds. Ensete, with seven species predominantly African.
Uses
Cultivated as an ornamental in gardens of tropical and subtropical regions.
It is very important as edible root in Ethiopia, especially enset pulp, used for the production of kocho, the traditional bread Gurege (People who live about 150 km southwest of Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, in the Gurage Regions , Kambaata and Hadiyya).
