The morphine used for pain relief salts dürften of the most common legal opium derivatives. Example, found the tincture of opium, better known as laudanum, in medicine until the early 19th Century wide use. In recent times, the most potent painkillers not won from the morphine, but its dimethyl derivative of thebaine. Example is buprenorphine. The importance of Papaver somniferum was already by Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689), the "English Hippocrates" highlighted:
"Among the remedies which it has pleased Almighty God to give to man to relieve his Suffering, None is so universal and so efficacious as opium." Dt (: "Of all the means that it pleased the Almighty to give us on that we alleviate our sufferings, none is as comprehensive and applicable as efficient in its effect as opium ")
This has not even today, almost four centuries later, nothing changed.
In addition to its analgesic (pain-killing) effect of opium is also antispasmodic, appetite-suppressing and antidiarrhoeal (durchfalllindernd). There has also hypnotic and sedative, so it is used especially in Asian countries as a drug.
