The Mountain Eight Orchid

The mountain eight orchid (Platanthera chlorantha, synonyms: Platanthera Platanthera bifolia and montana subsp. Chlorantha) is an orchid. It is found in Eurasia. The mountain eight orchid is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and moderately decreased in the Netherlands and Belgium and is protected by law.

The mountain eight orchid resembles the fragrant-orchid (Platanthera bifolia) but is distinguishable by the shape of the helmbindsel, placing boxes of the helmet and the shape of the top rail.

The plant is 20-50 cm high and blooms from late May in the southern Netherlands to early July in the north. The leaves are lanceolate, ovate and slightly wavy. The flower stem is angular with some scale-like leaves. The spike is rather long losbloemig. The helmbindsel, the green part of the anther between the two boxes helmet, is twice as long as wide. The helmet boxes are placed closer together than the bottom. The trail to the summit usually broadened.

The mountain eight orchid occurs on moderately moist, nutrient-poor soil Fri light deciduous forests and grasslands.

The plant has two tubers, one old and one young for storing food.
